- Are you a “pantser” or a “plotter?”
A bit of both, actually. I have my stories plotted before I start them, but if inspiration strikes me while I'm writing I'm very amendable to writing by the seat of my pants. - Detailed character sketches or “their character will be revealed to me as a I write”?
It depends—I usually have detailed sketches for those I know will be in the story, but a lot of times characters simply appear out of my finger, and then I have to make up their character as I go along. - Do you know your characters’ goals, motivations, and conflicts before you start writing or is that something else you discover only after you start writing?
It’s always hard to say, because lots of times, no matter how straight forward you attempt to be, little things will sometimes turn up that swing the story on a totally different course. Usually I think of how I want the story to begin and how I want it to end; what I want the characters to be or do, then let them make up their own goals, motivations, and conflicts as the story develops. - Books on plotting - useful or harmful?
I never read books that have anything to do with fictional writing—my imagination is plenty, thanks. - Are you a procrastinator or does the itch to write keep at you until you sit down and work?
It really depends on my muse, or mood or whatever you want to attribute the drive to write to—sometimes it’s there, sometimes it ain’t. - Do you write in short bursts of creative energy, or can you sit down and write for hours at a time?
Most of the time it begins as a burst of creative energy, but how long I can sustain it varies. - Are you a morning or afternoon writer?
I’m a “whenever the mood strikes me and I can’t keep my hands still” writer. Time means nothing to me when I’m stricken by creativity. - Do you write with music/the noise of children/in a cafe or other public setting, or do you need complete silence to concentrate?
I’m usually pretty good at blocking everything out, especially when I’m in a fit of writing—but if I can’t, there’s always headphones. Music doesn’t distract me. - Computer or longhand? (or typewriter?)
I prefer the computer, absolutely—but if one isn’t handy, a notebook or piece of scrap paper will suffice. - Do you know the ending before you type Chapter One?
Yep. - Does what’s selling in the market influence how and what you write?
No. - Editing - love it or hate it?
Hate it. There are many times when I’m reading over what I’ve written and have to *face-palm* because I cannot believe I’d made some stupid mistake.
- Are there any (fan)fiction trends/cliches that you're sick of?
I know it’s hard to believe but I’m really tired of all this fantasy stuff going around. I know it’s the “hot-thing” right now, but a lot of it is crap, with only a few real roses among all the thorns. - Do you read other people's (fan)fiction?
Absolutely. It’s about all I read, in fact.
- What inspires you?
Anything has the potential to inspire me, but music is especially adept at invoking inspiration. - Do you have trouble taking criticism?
Yep. - Ever been flamed?
Back when I first began writing I got a few—and I even kind of deserved them. I was baaaaaad. But I’ve improved a lot since then and I haven’t received a flame in years. - Best/worst feedback ever?
The best is everyone who tells me how much they like my stories and why.
- What's fun to write about?
Dude, anything can be fun to write about - Favorite thing(s) to write about:
I have to admit, I’m a sucker for romance. But I like character studies/introspection almost as well. - Least favorite(s):
Er, I don’t like writing conflict/fights—I’m terrible at it and my stories usually get stuck at that point. By conflict I’m talking mostly drama, like a fight between lovers or friends. Something about it—I’ve always had an aversion. If it happens on television I have to leave the room; in a book I have to skip it. As for fight scenes, they’re just notoriously hard to put in writing—something always ends up lost between what I see in my head and what appears on the screen/paper.
