I have been woefully distant from LJ as of late. I'm not proud of it but it's a fact. I simply had found other things to pique my interest (damn you Dofus!)
So, I come back and start seeing...things. Fishy things. Things that puzzled and confused me. Like entries from a few weeks back in virtually every fan-munity of mods assuring their members that their community was safe and whatnot. Well, why wouldn't it be? What the hell was going on?

So tonight I decide to do some digging. What do I come up with? Well, LJ with this ginormous apology that said a lot without really saying anything at all. Like I said--fishy. But I did get one little snippet: WFI
Now, as I wasn't around at the time, I had no idea what WFI was. And that was the only thing I had--initials. So I do what any college student would--i google and wiki it and come up with zilch. some kind of wireless company and a bunch of other shit that shouldn't have anything to do with LJ. Then I google "reaction to WFI" paired with Six Apart who sponsors LJ or something. Might even own it. I dunno, I haven't gotten that far yet, nor do I care.
Well, anyway, I learn what's been going on. Apparently WFI stands for "warriors for innocence" and they're a group who apparently goes around making trouble for all kinds of sites. Not that their mission is a bad one, theoretically. They "hunt and conquer" child pornography and pedophelia on the internet. Good right? Well, yeah, of course, but honestly they went about it in the wrongest way they could have. And also, a lot of the places they raise a ruckus at are LEGITIMATE websites/forums/journals with just a few rulebreakers that could be taken care of without mass hysteria getting involved. Like LJ
nyway, WFI allegedly kept trying to get in contact with LJ and Six Apart and weren't getting a response. So what do they do? THEY EMAIL THE ADVERTISORS ABOUT IT, y'know, the ones who keep LJ going, and cause this gigantic fucking panic, then they EMAIL SIX APART TO TELL THEM THEY CAUSED THE GIGANTIC FUCKING PANIC. So it went like this: WFI was a snot and made a huge deal>the avertisors went "OMG I HAD NO IDEA, DO SOMETHING ELJAY OR WE'LL PULL OUR FUNDING!!!1!!11">to which LJ responds "..." "..."> to which the advertisors respond "DO IT NOW OR WE REALLY WILL PULL IT, MAN! I GOT THE PLUG RIGHT HERE!"> So Six Apart and LJ go "okay okay, we surrender. we'll do whatever you want just don't kill us!>and then there's this big conspiracy covert ops assignment to get all the baddie stuff off LJ. Without telling anyone. Even the moderators> So then LJ deletes this ginormous list of communities and journals, most of which had nothing to do with kiddy porn or pedophilia(and especially fandom journals; especially survivors of abuse/incest/etc; especially legitimate fucking communities!)>which causes everyone on LJ to panic hardcore and go completely fucking nuts. (not that I blame them. I would have too.)
And no one knew what was going on, which was the cause of the panic. LJ did this, then stayed quiet in response to the mass internet rioting. Then they do an interview with cNet before posting anything in their news page, which pissed people off even more. It was awful. I'm so glad I wasn't around for it. Phew.
Did any of you know anything about this? Thoughts? Anyone know anything else about it or if I got my info straight?
ETA: *gigglesnort* it was pretty funny in LJ's big apology when the dude basically called WFI idiots. not expicity, but it was def. implied.
ETA: OMG, all this just makes me want to cry I'm so frustrated. That WFI group is little more than a group of zealots, who aren't actually doing anything to help! What do they really think they're doing with all this? For every account on LJ that is suspended, another 50 will pop up to take it's place. It's a fruitless battle, and it makes me so sad to see these people wasting all this energy on it, and with such a weak repetitive defence for it. "We are right and everyone else is wrong, so there!;P" is basically what it sums up to. I hate this, and I'm not gonna think about it anymore. It'll just make me madder.
