So, I was dicking around on the internet, and I decided to go watch some Cowboy Bebop subs. I was feeling nostalgic, what can I say?

So anyway, I was watching the subs, and was yet again reminded just how much I prefer the dub VA's to the Japanese seiyuus. CB is definitely in the rare category of anime where the English dub far and away outshines the Japanese version.

I'm the first to admit to being a dub-snob--I don't generally like them and I would usually much rather watch a sub than have to sit through terrible voice acting, and I'm sorry, but not having to read subtitles is usually just NOT WORTH the damage to my ears and the headaches that frequently ensue--but I'm also the first to admit that some dubs are on par, or even better (gasp!) than the original. Cowboy Bebop is just one of the examples. I also like Samurai Champloo's dub, though it isn't even close to as good as the Japanese and I VASTLY prefer Full Metal Achemist's dub to the subs. I <3<3<3 Edward's VA and think he does a fantastic job, and Roy's is simply too sexy for words, and Al's VA is so close to the original, that it's not even funny. They gave the FMA characters depth that I just didn't get from the subs.

Then there are attrocious dubs, of which there are too many to count, ahem Yu Yu Hakusho, Prince of Tennis, Yami no Matsuei, Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura, Bleach ahem, just to name a few.

Anyway, I found a thread the other day that was a few years old, and wanted to add my two cents, even if it's too late and not even in the right place. That's what really spawned this little monologue.

I've only one thing left to say. I both anticipate and dread the time when Death Note make it to Adult Swim (and it will--I have no doubt) to see how they butcher my beloved characters' lines. Because they will. Because it's Viz and Viz is the antichrist of Anime.

Have you ever found an author (fanfic, in this case) whose stories you can read over and over again? I have a couple of those, but the one that always sticks out in my mind is Laura Bryannan. She writes Samurai Champloo, both yaoi and het, and I swear every one of her Jin/Mugen stories just make me absolutely melt every single time, even the ones that are....well, not naughty. (by the way, for any noobs, yaoi=GAY.)They're just so well written and absolutely delicious. I can read them over and over and over again, and the best part is they usually inspire me to write. Mugen is really Mugen, and I get to see a side of him that I really believe is there, but we hardly ever get to see in the series. And Jin is just this rock, but a rock who sees things and feels things, without losing any of that strength. And Fuu. I love the way Laura writes Fuu, because it's completely canon, and I do so love my canon Fuu. But then, they're all canon, just... with more, somehow. I really highly recommend anyone read this. Having at least a semi strong knowledge of the series is recommended or else you'll be lost because a lot of her plot goes along with what happens in the real story. Actually reading the episode summaries at the Amalgam fansite would probably be enough, truthfully, though you won't get the subtle nuances that way.

So yes, back to the point. I'm rereading some of my favorites of hers, and just felt the need to gush about how brilliant she is. I have links to her site if anyone's interested.
